Your feet will love you

By Alex in Goals

While I don’t necessarily suggest going out and running around town barefoot like they do in this video, I wholeheartedly agree with what they’re saying. I’ve had my Vibram FiveFinger Sprints for about a year and a half now, and I am trying this year to live in them as much as possible. For example, Heather and I ran the Fools’ 5K on Saturday morning, and I ran in my VFFs. This was my first race of the year in them (as my model offers little protection from the cold) and I felt fantastic in them. My left arch nagged me a bit for the first half-mile or so, but I didn’t warm up as much as I should have, and the soreness disappeared by the first mile marker. What I hadn’t anticipated was how sore my calves would be. I thought that having walked around in them for a few weeks and running several short distances had conditioned my legs enough for a 5K. It’s now Monday afternoon and I have been gimping around the office all day still. So, lesson learned, start small! Start small!

Edit: having some trouble embedding this YouTube video into my post. View it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jrnj-7YKZE

After watching that, don’t you just feel inspired?? I know I do. Sore calves or not, I’m getting a run in tomorrow! (Don’t worry, I’ll keep it to two or fewer miles!)

In other news, Heather begins her vegan quest today, and I will be watching from the sidelines most intently. Brett (our housemate) has also been working on going vegetarian, so I will have plenty of opportunities to join in. And I think I will. Checking up on my Facebook feed today, I saw a quote from one of my all-time favorite books, and I want to share it with you:

“People don’t want their lives fixed. Nobody wants their problems solved. Their dramas. Their distractions. Their stories resolved. Their messes cleaned up. Because what would they have left? Just the big scary unknown.”

-Chuck Palahniuk, “Survivor

Dare to jump in. Dare to face the unknown. It’s something I still struggle with, but it makes life breathtaking. So many people are mediocre. Be extraordinary. And it all starts with the first step.

eek vegan. i did it for a year, and it was probably the worst thing in the world on my body. eating raw is by far the best thing i ever have done, but is 10000 times harder than eating vegan.

i WAS vegetarian until last week. doctor started presenting me numbers and i recognized how ridiculous it has been on my body. unless you are SUPER careful and plan your proteins well – everything gets thrown outta whack.
